A firm handshake and a smile, our friend Solo Scott exudes humble confidence. On the day we met up, the swells were capping 600 yards outside the El Segundo jetty. I asked him how big he thought they were, thinking it would have to be at least 15 foot for that to occur. “Maybe 8 foot,” he replied. His answer was classic Solo Scott, do big things as if they were small and thrive. After all, Solo is an incredible surfer, an original Z Boy and the coolest mother fucker you’ve ever met. He’s also an accomplished realtor in his home town of Venice(Solo grew up on Paloma Ave). Solo is doing life right and a perfect fit for our Men Of Venice series.

What does it mean to be a man?

It’s taking responsibilities for your actions. I don’t want to sound cliche but its all the things that allow me to live a life of integrity, meaning be a man of your word, take responsibilities for your actions and have a little fun along the way, Which isn’t always easy to do.

What does it mean to be a man in Venice?

A lot of the guys I grew up with in Venice didn’t have dads, mostly from single family homes because their dads bailed out and didn’t take responsibility for their actions. So it’s being responsible for the new generation of kids and creating a good house hold for them grow up and creating a good environment for the kids in the community to grow up in. Creating potential for the next generation, not just my own kids, all the youth. That’s why I think it’s great to help out organizations like the Boys and Girls Club that gives back to the kids. What ever we can do for the youth, because we had it pretty rough.

When have you felt most like a man?

Surfing 10-12 foot sunset in Hawaii on a tiny surfboard, dodging the west peak or getting caught in side and having to dive off and survive. Then I’ll always go back to the family thing, the responsibility and being a dad. Watching the birth of both my daughters. But manly manly? Definitely surfing 10-12 foot sunset and surviving.

*Editors note: Solo’s 10-12 feet is 18-25 foot actual feet.
